NITC Participant: Ghazwa Malhas/ Information Advisor For DG Office Organizers: The Syrian Ministry of Communication and Technology with the coordination of the Arab League. Participants: Six Arab countries participated in the meeting including Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Sudan, the Emirates, Saudi including ESCWA and Arab Information Architects (Syria). Recommendations: - Application of Arabic grammar to retain the language. - Simplify the use of names. - Avoid mixing Arabic letters with foreign ones. - Avoid the use of diacritics. - Avoid letter folding. - Allow the use of the dash between words - Allow the use of the two forms of numbers, in its westren and eastren forms. - Adopt the Arabic script table of Unicode. - Adopt the Arabic country code of the Arabic standard (no. 642-1985) produced by ALDOC of the Arab League and place a request to update it. - Propose a general guideline for the use of Arabic domain names for registrars and registrants. - Request the registration of the top level domain .Arab, with ICANN.

Free and Opensource Software Workshop, Damascus, 2-4/3/2005 Participant: Ali Al-Khalidi / Head of Technical Consulting. Aim: The Free and Opensource Software Workshop is considered a new initiative launched by NOSSTIA (Network of Syrian Scientists, Technologists and Innovators Abroad) and Syrian GNU/Linux Users group in order to spread the concept of Open source software and support the development process of the IT Sector in Syria. The Importance of this workshop came from the fact that it presents and enhances the concept and philosophy of open source software as a potential alternative of the closed software in the world. Also, the workshop seeks to bridge local expertise with regional and world expertise.The workshop contributed to capacity building and knowledge transfer to enhance and promote the competency of the industry professionals.

Workshop to
Launch Results of the Multiple Purpose Family Survey of 2003, Amman, 14/3/2005 Organizers: Department of Statistics. Participants: relevant Jordanian public sector organizations and NGOs. Aim: to explain to relevant organizations the statistical methodology used in the survey and compare the different findings with previous surveys.

Participatory Rapid Appraisal Workshop (PRA), Amman, 19-28 Dec., 2004
Participants: Trainees from 10 Knwledge Stations participated, they came from the three different regions in Jordan, north, south and middle. Aim:The workshop was designed to train trainers on identifying the different socio-economic needs of the communities through partnering with the local people and through the use of IT to enhance development projects in each community. The duration of the project was six months.
